P. Joseph Lehman, Inc., Consulting Engineers designed the replacement of the flood walls for Hyndman Borough in Bedford County, PA, in April 1997. Several floods had plagued the borough for many years, including a January 1996 flood that washed away the walls.
Construction of the Hyndman Borough Flood Wall
Some $700,000 in construction funds were obtained and other obstacles were overcome, and construction began in October 1998. The new flood walls were constructed utilizing twin steel beams concreted five feet into the rock, rock anchor tie-backs concreted ten feet into the rock, and precast reinforced concrete panels. Lehman Engineers completed the flood wall replacement on schedule and under budget.
