P. Joseph Lehman, Inc., Consulting Engineers was responsible for the restoration and preservation of the Academia Covered Bridge that crosses Tuscarora Creek between Beale and Spruce Hill Townships in Juniata County, Pennsylvania. The bridge, a two-span timber Burr Truss bridge 278′-9″ in length, is the longest covered bridge still standing in the state. Preservation efforts were necessary because of the extensive damage done to the bridge over the years by the powder post beetle. AcademiaSmallPhoto2The entire structure was dismantled, every part was numbered and coded, and as much of the original material as possible used to reconstruct the bridge in the same location as the original.  Timber stock and grade were also selected to resemble the original materials as much as possible. A pedestrian and educational area was also added near the approach, with benches and signage chosen for durability. The project, completed in 2009, was funded through various grants obtained by Lehman Engineers for the Juniata County Historical Society.
