Two bridges, owned by Bedford County, are officially anew after extensive refurbishments over the past few months.

Both spans, each in Hopewell Township, were celebrated during a Tuesday afternoon, October 22nd, ceremony at the Bridge No. 5 location on Polecat Hollow Road near its intersection with Route 26.

The work at Bridge No. 5 and also Bridge No. 7 was done as a bundled project between the Bedford County Commissioners, Lehman Engineers, and Cottle’s Asphalt Maintenance.

“I thank the commissioners for their unyielding efforts to obtain funding for this project,” Lehman Engineers President Joe Lehman said. “It’s a large investment to Bedford County for its infrastructure, and transportation in the area.”

Lehman added that his firm has been part of 35 rehabilitation or replacement bridge plans in the county, with additional work on a dozen local covered bridges over the years.
This project featured a lot of rehab work and replacement of beams along with associated aspects of the bridges. Overall, it was under additional requirements of needing to be completed enough for traffic in between school years to accommodate bus routes in the Northern Bedford County School District.

“(Cottle’s) did a fantastic job in such a short period of time,” Commissioner Mike Stiles said. “It’s a beautiful new bridge.”
