Tammie Fleck, Office Manager, Graduates from Leadership Blair County Class of 2023

The Leadership Blair County Class of 2023, which included Tammie Fleck, Office Manager, presented a check to the Booker T. Washington Revitalization Project this morning! Through their Casino-Themed 200 Club fundraiser and other donations, the class was able to donate over $30,000 for a new park in the Garden Heights area.   This donation was made possible by many donors within our community and P. JOSEPH LEHMAN, Inc. was one of them!

Tammie began the Leadership Blair County program in September, 2022 and graduated with 19 other classmates in June, 2023.  Tammie joins other staff who were previous graduates of the program, including:  Ashley O’Neil, 2021; Sherrie Markley, 2012; Chuck Meyers, 2011, and Joe Lehman, Jr., 2008.

The Mission of LBC is to develop and enhance community leadership by challenging and preparing individuals from diverse backgrounds to assume more active and effective roles in addressing the needs of the community.

Established in 1994, Leadership Blair County cultivates, develops, and nurtures the potential leaders within our community. The program identifies, educates, and motivates the area’s promising leaders and prepares them for service to our community in a variety of important roles. Through a series of sessions, often using the community itself for its classroom, the program allows class participants to exchange ideas and information with established leaders and experts from many fields. Future leaders gain first-hand experience about critical issues as they develop the skills necessary to become an effective community leader.

Sponsored by the Blair County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Blair County boasts 527 graduates.

The history of LBC is that in 1991, The Chamber adopted a Long Range Plan, which contained a goal to develop a leadership program that would train policy makers for area organizations and non-profit groups.

During the winter of 1992, Tim Sissler and John Schraff, who was the Executive Director of The Chamber at that time, recruited a diverse group of 12 volunteers from the community to begin putting together the Leadership Blair County Program. These committee members represented non-profit groups, businesses, health care, government, social service agencies, etc.

For the next 18 months, they reviewed existing leadership programs in other communities and worked hard to capture the best aspects of each program they visited or read about and began to set the objectives.

During 1994-95, the first class went through this new program. They too had an orientation, overnight retreat, 8 full day sessions and graduation in June.
Each class develops a great working relationship with each other, and has the opportunity to meet and network with established leaders from all corners of Blair County as they learn about topics like regional appreciation and tourism, business and transportation, government, education, health care, human services and housing.

In 1995 we were able to hire Chuck Kormanski, formerly of Penn State Altoona. Chuck facilitated our monthly sessions and worked with the adult committee to design the sessions. Chuck retired in 2007. The new facilitator for the Adult program is Maureen Dodson, Ph.D., Retired Senior Manager, Baker, Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP.

14th Year with Adopt A Highway Program

P. Joseph Lehman, Inc., Consulting Engineers is pleased to announce the firm’s involvement in the Adopt A Highway program. The firm is very proud of our staff for participating in the annual Adopt A Highway program. Our firm has been involved since June of 2009! Our firm is very proud to serve Blair County and the surrounding areas, but always want to contribute to making and keeping it the best.

On Monday, May 15th, several staff from our firm volunteered their time to perform the 14th straight year of clearing trash and debris. The firm’s area covers Route 36/Penn Street, Hollidaysburg, PA from blocks starting at Hewitt Street near the YMCA to the intersection of Chimney Rocks Road and Bedford Street.  A big shout out to those staff that volunteered:  Jim Frank, Boby Bryant, Sarah Lockard, Bev Green, Chantal Sisko, Tammie Fleck, Betsy Lehman, Joe Lehman, children of Joe and Betsy: Lauren and Joey Lehman, Ryan Granville, Ken Szala, Elizabeth Heggi, Adam Shriver, and Ryan Murphy.

Although this year was hot, every filled bag was worth its weight in gold. Thank you to P. Joseph Lehman, Inc., for their volunteers this year and all the years prior. Many thanks also to numerous other businesses and organizations that support this program also! Most importantly, thank you to PennDOT for coordinating the program to keep Pennsylvania highways safe and clean!

In 1984, the idea for the Adopt A Highway program was born when James Evans, an engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation, witnessed litter blowing out of the back of a pickup truck he was following in Tyler, Texas. Concerned about the increasing cost to the government of keeping roadways clean, Evans began asking community groups to volunteer to pick up trash along designated sections of local state highways. Evans got few takers for his idea, however, in 1985, Billy Black, the Public Information Officer for the Texas Department of Transportation took up the cause and organized the first official Adopt A Highway program. In April of 1990, The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) began its Adopt A Highway (AAH) program. Since 1990, volunteers have been beautifying roadsides two miles at a time!

“Engineers Fight to CAN Hunger”

Under the Umbrella of Let’s Can Hunger, P. Joseph Lehman, Inc. Consulting Engineers has donated $1,665 to support the cause this year. Jim Frank, Client Services Director, presented the donation. The firm held fundraising activities and followed Lauren Lehman’s lead again this year during her 11th annual Birthday Food Drive and as a team, helped her to collect $1,115 and a truckload of food for the Dorothy Day Outreach Center and an additional $550 for the American Rescue Workers.

Once again, Lauren led the initiative and asked neighbors, family, friends, school, friends at Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School, and friends at Lehman Engineers to donate food or funds. Lauren distributed flyers and food boxes to collect food donations. Lauren delivered an SUV packed with food for the Dorothy Day Outreach Center’s food pantry. The total dollars raised included cash from Lauren’s handmade, glass bead bracelet sales – available at Dr. Joan Bartolotta Optometrist locations in Roaring Spring and Ebensburg, Pa.  Employee fundraising events were also held at Lehman’s office during National Engineers Week.

The Dorothy Day Outreach Center, a volunteer-based agency near the Saint Francis University Campus in Loretto, is an expression of Franciscan values in action. Their service initiatives are geared toward children, the elderly, veterans, the poor, and people with special needs. Lauren selected this group to support their efforts to feed hundreds of families each year.

Lauren would like to thank everyone that supported her and appreciates the collaboration with Lehman Engineers during the “Engineers Fight to CAN Hunger” campaign and the great generosity of the employees at Lehman Engineers.
