Hewitt Covered Bridge

Hewitt Covered Bridge Major rehabilitation of Bedford County's historic Hewitt Covered Bridge is complete. The official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on October 27, 2000. The Bedford County Commissioners dedicated the newly refurbished span, originally built around 1880.
Joining in the ribbon cutting with Chairman Dave Thompson and Commissioner Ira Claycomb were: Sandy Crawford, Bedford County Covered Bridge Society Earl Neiderhiser, District Engineer, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Engineering District 9-0 Joe Lehman, Jr., P. Joseph Lehman, Inc., Consulting Engineers Karen Cregger, Chairperson, Southampton Township Supervisors Dennis Tice, Executive Director, Bedford County Visitors Bureau Residents Vergie Greenwalt, Helen McElfish, and Kenneth Northcraft State Representative Dick Hess and field representative Scott Pasierb from State Senator Robert Jubelirer's office also attended. County Commissioner Dick Rice was unable to attend, but sent written salutations. The Hewitt is his 7th county covered bridge rehabilitation project with our firm.
Tom Walczak, President, Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society of Pennsylvania, Inc. also attended the ceremony. He recently provided our firm with the following letter:
About 80% of the original structural members were able to be re-used, which speaks highly of Bedford County craftsmanship 120 years ago.
